Q2. Is anise the same as star anise? No — different plants entirely. Anise (Pimpinella anisum) is a small seed from a herbaceous plant in the Apiaceae family. Star anise (Illicium verum) is a woody, star-shaped fruit from an evergreen tree, grown mainly in China and Vietnam. Both contain anethole and taste similar, but they are not interchangeable on a specification, and they clear customs under different codes. We supply Pimpinella anisum.
