What is the difference between calendula petals and whole flowers? Petals are separated from the flower head, giving higher pigment concentration per kilo and no green receptacle material. Separation is labour-intensive and yields a fraction of the input weight, so calendula petals are priced substantially above whole heads. Whole flower suits infusion and visible-botanical tea; petals suit cosmetics, colourant, and premium blends.

Is calendula the same as marigold? Both are called marigold in English, but they are different genera. Calendula is Calendula officinalis (pot marigold); Tagetes — African or Aztec marigold — is Tagetes erecta, and it is the main commercial lutein source. If your specification is for lutein extraction, confirm which species it names — they are not substitutable.

Are calendula and marigold both directly edible? No, only Calendula officinalis is safe for direct human consumption. While Calendula officinalis (pot marigold) is non-toxic and widely consumed directly in salads, herbal teas, and culinary blends, Tagetes species (Mexican or French marigolds) are not intended for direct food use and can cause stomach distress if eaten raw in volume. In industrial processing, Tagetes is only processed for extracting natural poultry feed pigments, whereas Calendula officinalis is the sole species certified for direct edible and botanical applications.

Post-harvest, stored material naturally darkens and loses its vivid brilliance over time due to natural oxidation; therefore, securing fresh crop during the harvest months guarantees peak color intensity and pigment retention.
