What Affects Flax Tow Price:

• Shive/boon is a key quality factor. Our flax tow is available in four processing grades, with the processing level determining the quality, cleanliness, and final price. The number of processing stages through the Scharll machine progressively reduces residual material, with our selected grades achieving less than 10% residual waste. Therefore, a higher processing grade means cleaner tow, lower shive/boon content, and a higher value.

Q1. Who are we? We are a third-generation family business established in 2007, with roots in Egyptian agriculture going back to 1960. In herbs and seeds, we work directly as producers and exporters. In Egyptian flax, we have been traders and exporters for over 7 years, supplying markets including Turkey, China, and India. Our strength is selecting and supplying the quality grade required by each buyer, including our premium AA grade, as well as standard and lower grades for different applications and price requirements.

Q2. What is re-scutched tow, and what does “arrous” mean? Flax tow consists of shorter fibres obtained during the scutching process. Re-scutched tow undergoes additional cleaning stages to further reduce residual shives and other impurities, resulting in a cleaner and more uniform fibre. Our Flax Arrous is processed through four successive cleaning stages using a Charle machine, with each stage further reducing the shive content. Selected grades can achieve a shive content below 10%, with the final grade and price depending on the required cleanliness level and processing stage. “Arrous” is a commonly used Egyptian trade name for re-scutched flax tow.

Q3. What is the difference between flax tow and long line fibre? Long line fibre consists of longer, more aligned and cleaner flax fibre bundles, typically selected for finer yarns and premium textile applications. Flax tow consists of shorter, more irregular and often more entangled fibres separated during flax processing, and can be further cleaned and processed for coarser yarns, composites, insulation, paper and other industrial applications. Because the two products differ in fibre length, cleanliness, fineness and processing requirements, they should not be compared on price alone.

Q4. Why does shive content matter? Shives are fragments of the woody core that can remain with the flax fibre after scutching. Higher shive content can reduce fibre cleanliness, affect processing efficiency, and limit the suitability of the tow for certain applications. This is why shive content is an important quality parameter for flax tow. Our re-scutching process provides additional cleaning to reduce residual shives and other impurities, resulting in a cleaner tow with different grades available according to the required specification and application.

Q5. What is the MOQ? The MOQ is one 40′ FCL, approximately 20-22 metric tons.

Q6. Can I have the Flax Two tested independently? Yes. SGS or any inspection company of your choice can verify the fibre’s quality and quantity at your cost. We can also arrange a buyer’s visit to inspect the grade, colour, and tensile strength before baling, witness the empty and loaded container weights at the weighbridge, attend the loading, and personally seal the container.
